The Adrenaline is a fairly neutral shoe with a high arch and smooth heel-to-toe transition. This combination provides the runner with a stable, smooth ride that won’t over-energize or slow you down. The upper has been updated over the years and now has much more support than before without compromising breathability. Also, grab a deal on Merrell Moab 2 Black Friday.
The Adrenaline has a traditional two-part upper with an external heel counter and internal bootie construction. The tongue is sewn into the upper eliminating any extra stitching on top of your feet, which helps reduce foot irritation by decreasing seams rubbing against your feet. The heel is well padded and hugs the foot nicely, without any excess material.
The shoe has a decently wide forefoot which makes it comfortable for people with wider than average feet. I bought my true size, a 10, and had enough room in the toebox even though I have a narrow foot. The toebox does flare out wider than I would like in the midfoot, however. This is not a problem for me and never bothered me during my runs or when walking, so it may just be a personal preference issue.
Brooks uses Flex Grooves in this shoe to provide increased flexibility and allow foot muscles room to work without compressing them. Flex Grooves are my favorite way of increasing flexibility; they give shoes a smoother feel and make each stride smooth and easy.
The Adrenaline has a few plastic arch pieces through the midsole that provide good support and stability, even though I wouldn’t say this shoe is an overly stable shoe. A few plastic arch pieces provide all the support you need to keep your feet, ankles, and knees in alignment.
The sole has a segmented crash pad that absorbs shock before it reaches your heel. This design is meant to reduce the impact of every step so you can get back out on the road faster. The segments are made up of three different densities which flex at different points creating a smooth heel-to-toe transition.
I did find the crash pad design too exaggerated for my liking. It felt like I was running on stilts which made me feel top-heavy and slow. This, combined with an overly wide forefoot, made me slightly less inclined to run in this shoe compared to other neutral shoes I have tried.
A few years ago Brooks changed the Heel Proven Technology from a conventional heel cup to a more streamlined, foot-shaped design. This new design allows for better breathability and fit. The Adrenaline has a wide base that wraps around your entire heel and is cushiony which provides a secure feeling fit without causing discomfort.
I’ll end this one with a disclaimer that while you could find other stability trainers that look nicer and more visually appealing, the Brooks Adrenaline is as reliable as they come. If you want to be sure your money is well spent on an exercise product, it’s hard to beat the reliability of this model.
