The Kayano is a tried and true model for ASICS, who has been in the game since 1987. It was responsible for revolutionizing the stability trainer market with its dual-density collar foam.
The 2015 version of this shoe looks to be more of an evolution rather than a reinvention of what is already out there, offering small upgrades to improve an already successful model. The upper has been changed to now include a sewn-in tongue, replacing the signature tounge-less style. Mesh was added to both the medial and lateral quarter panels for increased ventilation. Finally, the heel counter was also enlarged to provide more support, which should improve heel lockdown. Also, check Asics GT 2000 Black Friday Deals.
The Kayano 27 comes in at 14.5 ounces, which is on the heavier side compared to its counterparts. It has a 10mm heel drop and features ASICS FluidRide and DuoMax technologies. The Fluidride medial post was removed, creating a more simple and less complicated ride than previous models of the Kayano.
The upper feels very strong but not constricting, which is one of the best things about this new version. One of the best feeling uppers from a stability trainer out there, but not completely without faults. The heel collar has been raised up higher than I would like it to be and digging into my Achilles a little bit. Also, I found that the fit can get slightly sloppy on rougher terrain, but this complaint is somewhat minor.
The Fluidride midsole has a nice bouncy feel to it, and the forefoot doesn’t have that stuffed feeling that I dislike about most stability trainers. The toe-off feels smooth and natural, which again makes for a very pleasurable ride. Not an incredibly fast shoe by any means but it is surprising how easy this shoe responds, and I think it mostly has to do with the natural and smooth ride.
The DuoMax support system has been slightly altered from its predecessor as well. It is now more flexible in its medial side, so if you twist your foot sideways on hard cuts the heel will not feel like it is spinning. Also, the support seems to be more predictable and stable, which I really like.
The outsole has very durable carbon rubber placed in high wear areas, including the heel, forefoot, and lateral side of the toe box. The rest of this shoe is blown rubber or blown plastic so it should resist abrasion as well as most other shoes on the market.
Best Road Running Shoe
The Kayano 27 is one of the best feeling stability trainers I have tested, which seems to be very much in line with previous versions. The upper does fit differently than other Kayanos throughout the years, but it still has that great plush ride that I have come to expect from this shoe.
I really do like where ASICS went with this shoe, it is easily one of the best shoes in its class. For me, it is comparable to the Saucony Guide 7, but with a little bit more underfoot cushioning. If you are looking for an excellent stability trainer that can be used daily or for racing I would not hesitate to recommend this shoe.
ASICS has released the Kayano 27, a shoe that is meant to have two distinct personalities. The heel area of the shoe provides stability features and support systems while the forefoot offers more flexibility for natural movement. While I did experience some tightness in my midfoot toebox at first, it loosened over time allowing me to enjoy this trainer much more fully. If you are looking for a shoe with both comfort and performance, look no further than the ASICS Kayano 27s!
